Cytokines and Growth Factors

Species-specific cytokines and growth factors are indispensable in cell biology research, whether amplifying cells in culture, differentiating cells in culture, or generating and maintaining whole animal models.

EGF binds to one of its’ possible receptors on the outside of the cell and initiates a signal cascade of biochemical changes within the cell. It generally stimulates the proliferation of epithelial and epidermal cells.

Here are two examples:

1. For Human Hematopoietic Stem Cells we sell a pack including human SCF, human TPO, and human FLT-3 Ligand.
Cat. No. Y-3327 - Human Hematopoietic Stem Cell Expansion Bundle:
This combination has been demonstrated to allow CD34+ cells to proliferate without decreasing CD34 expression; this continual CD34 expression allows them to retain their pluripotency. The combination of these cytokines allows for the ex vivo expansion of the most immature hematopoietic stem cells in cord blood or bone marrow preparations, but since we sell each cytokine individually the pack can easily be supplemented with other cytokines to promote differentiation along specific lineages. For example, GM-CSF and/or G-CSF can be added to generate monocytes and granulocytes or EPO can be added to generate erythroid cells. IL-6 and/or IL-3 can be used in conjunction with SCF and FLT-3 Ligand to promote expansion of more mature hematopoietic CD34+ progenitor cells.

2. For Neural Stem Cells we sell a pack of human EGF and FGF-basic 154.
Cat. No. Y-3340 - Human Neural Stem Cell Expansion Protein Bundle:
Neural Stem Cells (NSC) are self-renewing cells that can be differentiated in culture into different types of neurons as well as into astrocytes and oligodenrocytes. NSC can be derived from fetal neural stem cells, adult neural stem cells, embryonic stem cells, and adult somatic cells, and are usually expanded and maintained in 2D monolayers or neurosphere cultures containing recombinant EGF and FGF-basic (also called FGF-2 or bFGF) at concentrations between 10-20 ng/mL each. Recombinant human EGF and FGF-basic show cross-species reactivity so they are sometimes used in mouse and rat cultures.
